Adoption geography
Retail and institutional adoption are different signals
How Chainalysis constructs the 2025 index and what its geography can - and cannot - say about tokenized-property demand.
Key findings
- India ranked first and the United States second in the 2025 composite index.
- Retail centralized activity counts transfers below $10,000, while the new institutional sub-index uses transfers above $1M.
- APAC led grassroots activity; North America and Europe were larger in absolute received value in the report period.
- Population adjustment changes the leading geography, with Ukraine, Moldova, and Georgia at the top.
Practical meaning
- Use geography to inform distribution, onboarding, language, payment, and professional-partner planning.
- Separate grassroots activity from institutional flows and from actual demand for a particular property structure.
Composite methodology
Chainalysis combines four sub-indices across 151 countries, weights for population and purchasing power, takes a geometric mean, and normalizes the result. A rank is therefore not raw transaction value.
Why retail and institutional differ
Small transfers can reflect household use, while transfers above $1M may reflect institutions, intermediaries, or transactions conducted for end clients. The thresholds improve segmentation but do not reveal every actor's identity.
Limitations
- Web-traffic patterns help attribute activity to countries and can be affected by VPNs.
- Transfer-size thresholds are proxies, not identity verification.
- The 2025 methodology removed retail DeFi and added an institutional sub-index.
What this source does not establish
- Demand for tokenized real estate
- Accredited-investor status
- Regulatory permission
- Wealth or risk tolerance
